Rabi’a al-Adawiyya – Sufi Saint of Divine Love
Mystic of Devotion • Voice of Pure Surrender • Lover of the Beloved
Opening the Scroll
“I do not worship for fear of hell,
nor for promise of heaven.
I worship because I love —
because Love itself burns within me.
For where Love is,
there the Beloved dwells.”
— Rabi’a al-Adawiyya
The Message
Rabi’a al-Adawiyya, an 8th-century Sufi saint, is one of the earliest and most profound voices of Islamic mysticism. She lived in radical devotion, teaching that true worship is not for reward or fear of punishment, but purely for love of the Divine. Her prayers and poetry burn with longing, surrender, and union.
Rabi’a reminds us that love is the essence of the spiritual path — not as desire for gain, but as selfless devotion. She teaches that when we release fear and reward, we discover the Beloved within, and that every breath can become an offering of love.
